No water supply

Water supply will be suspended in the Howrah Municipal Corporation area for 24 hours from 2pm on Tuesday. According to civic officials, a major crack in the main grid of Padmapukur Water Works was detected on Monday, which needs urgent repairs. Manas Das, the secretary of the municipality, said civic engineers hoped to restore supply by Wednesday afternoon. He added that all 44 wards in the core area would be affected.

Cop gets bail

Basudeb Bag, the deputy inspector-general (development and welfare), was granted anticipatory bail by a Howrah court on Monday. Bag was accused of torturing his eight-year-old domestic help on May 6 and booked under IPC sections 23 and 26.

Puri train

South Eastern Railway will run a pair of special trains between Puri and Howrah for Ratha Yatra. The Howrah-Puri Ratha Yatra Special will leave Howrah at 6.05pm on Tuesday and reach Puri at 3.30am on Wednesday. The train will start from Puri at 11pm on Wednesday and arrive at Howrah at 9.05am on Thursday.

Uluberia halt

The Howrah-Digha Kandari Express will stop at Uluberia from Wednesday on an experimental basis for six months, South Eastern Railway announced on Monday. Officials said the train from Howrah would reach Uluberia at 3.04pm and the train from Digha would arrive at Uluberia at 8.52pm.

Found dead

A 39-year-old man was found hanging in his Shyampukur home on Monday. Jogesh Kumar Ghosh was taken to RG Kar hospital, where he was declared dead, police said. A preliminary probe revealed Ghosh was an alcoholic and lived alone. Cops suspect he committed suicide as he was suffering from depression. The body was sent for post-mortem.
