Teacher held for wife suicide

Basudeb Chakraborty, 43, a lecturer of Jangipur College in Murshidabad, was arrested in Lake Town on Wednesday morning on the charge of abetting his wife’s suicide.

Police said Rakhi Chakraborty, 36, hanged herself in her Lake Town apartment on Tuesday morning. Her father lodged a complaint alleging that Basudeb had tortured her physically for dowry over the past five years.

“The teacher was arrested on the basis of the complaint. He has been remanded in police custody for three days,” said an officer of Lake Town police station.

The officer said the couple had got married 14 years ago. Rakhi has left behind an 11-year-old daughter who studies in a central Calcutta school.

“My sister had been subjected to physical torture by her husband for dowry over the past five years. Her husband also had an extra-marital affair with another teacher and my sister had come to know about it,” said Rakhi’s brother Rahul Ghose.

The couple had been living at 551/1 SK Deb Road in Lake Town for the past 10 years. Basudeb stayed in Jangipur and would come to Calcutta on weekends.
