Andhra boy, Bengal girl win singles

Guwahati, June 12: Sheikh Abdullah of Andhra Pradesh and Amrita Mukherjee of West Bengal annexed the boys and girls’ singles titles in the OIL-AITA Super Series (under-16) tennis tournament that concluded at the Chachal Tennis Complex here today.

Abdullah defeated Nagaland lad Vilasier Khate, representing Haryana, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, while Mukherjee eased past J. Doondipriya of Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 6-2, in the girls’ final.

In the semi-finals yesterday, Abdullah outplayed third seed Abhishek Alla (Andhra Pradesh) 6-4, 6-0, and Khate defeated fourth seed Abhimanyu Singh of Delhi 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

In the girls’ semi-finals, Mukherjee defeated Spurti Shivalingaiah of Karnataka 0-6, 7-6(5), 6-1.

The other semi-final encounter also witnessed a challenge from unseeded Seeulee Upadhyaya of Orissa. Doondipriya won the match 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Abhishek Alla and Abdullah bagged the doubles titles yesterday, defeating Abhimanyu Singh and Vilasier Khate 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8 in a gruelling boys’ doubles final on Thursday afternoon.

Mukherjee and Doondipriya faced little challenge from opponents Bharti Bylapudi and Lavanya Saravanan for a 6-0, 6-1, set victory in the girls’ final yesterday.

All Assam Tennis Association secretary Raktim Saikia gave away the prizes today.
