Blaze at factories

Three plywood factories caught fire in Gurudas Dutta Lane in Ultadanga on Friday afternoon. Ten tenders brought the blaze under control in two hours. Bibhas Guha, the divisional fire officer, said the fire started around 5pm in one of the factories and spread to two adjoining ones. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. “The factories were stacked with combustible material but lacked safety measures,” said a fire brigade official. Negligence cases will be started against the factory-owners, added the official.

Bridge open

A bridge connecting tank No. 8 in Salt Lake with an approach road to New Town Road was unveiled by municipal affairs minister Asok Bhattacharya on Friday afternoon. The bridge, built at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore, will help commuters reach New Town Road and EM Bypass Beleghata connector bypassing Sector V.

Two arrested

Two men were arrested at a bus stand off Howrah station on Friday for allegedly trying to extort money from a couple. Police said Bhola Gupta and Sanjay Roy took away the luggage of Manotosh Mandal and his wife Lakshmi, residents of East Midnapore, and demanded money to return the bags. Plainclothesmen from Golabari police station saw the incident and arrested the duo.

Road mishap

A 25-year-old unidentified youth was knocked down by a taxi while crossing Strand Road on Thursday night. The youth was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Man held

Pukai Das, a 27-year-old resident of Lake Town wanted for murders and extortion, was arrested on Thursday night in Dum Dum. A revolver and three rounds of cartridges were found on him.

Clash

Five youths were arrested after two groups of residents clashed at Mahabirtala, on Tollygunge Circular Road, on Friday evening. Rapid Action Force was deployed in the area.

Water protest

Residents of Baghajatin demonstrated in front of the Borough XI office on Friday demanding supply of clean drinking water in the area.
