Body of 10-yr-old found

Malda, June 1: The mutilated body of Mamtaj Khatun, 10, was recovered from a jute field in Ramakrishnapur village near Chanchol this morning.

Police said the girl had been missing since last evening and the beheaded body was found barely a kilometre from her home. The father of the victim, Ziaul Haq, told the police that his daughter would enter the house of his neighbour while playing and they had threatened to kill her. The superintendent of police of Malda, Satyajit Banerjee, said the neighbours were absconding.


Poll papers

Siliguri: CPM candidates on Monday filed their nomination papers for the elections to all the seven seats of Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad with Sharad Dwivedi, the Siliguri subdivisional officer. The last date of the submission of nomination papers is June 3, while the polls will be held on June 28.


Film fest

Siliguri: Shishu Kishor Academy and the state information and cultural department will jointly organise a three-day children’s film festival at Dinabandhu Mancha here from June 4 to 6. Six films are to be screened and there will be two shows everyday. The list includes Gaja Ukiler Hatya Rahashya, Ek Ajuba, and The Goal.


Gherao

Jaigaon: Workers of Dimdima Tea Estate gheraoed the garden manager on Monday, demanding regular disbursement of rationed items, supply of firewood and proper maintenance of their quarters. Labour leaders said the gherao was withdrawn after the manager had assured them that renovation of the quarters would start on Tuesday.


Suicide

Islampur: Rajkumar Malakar, 15, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at his residence in Jagtagaon near Chopra on Monday.
