Lightning kills 3 children

Malda, May 21: Three schoolchildren died after being struck by lightning at Kahala village near Ratua in Malda today.

The dead were Sadhai Basak, 12, Nripen Basak, 10 and Shibani Majhi, 10. Police said all of them were students of Kahala High School and were returning home after classes. The children had entered a mango orchard to collect the fruits, which had fallen in a storm. Soon, a bolt of lightning struck the three.


Ward blow

Calcutta: A division bench of the Calcutta high court on Thursday cancelled the delimitation of wards in the Islampur municipality and directed the district magistrate-cum-election officer of North Dinajpur to follow the guidelines in the municipal laws while adding different areas within the municipality in future.


Suicide

Islampur: A 10-year-old girl, Tahera Khatoon, committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Panjipara on Thursday. The girl’s father Md Munir told police that he had scolded her yesterday as she did not want to go to school. The girl later killed herself.


Girls rescued

Siliguri: Siliguri police rescued four girls from a brothel at Khalpara here on Wednesday night. The police said the girls were aged between 19 and 22 years and all were from different places of Assam.


Gambling

Siliguri: Nine persons were arrested for gambling from Station Feeder Road and Tikiapara here on Thursday afternoon and Rs 2,030 was recovered.


Cancer week

Siliguri: Siliguri Sumita Cancer Relief Welfare and Educational Society will observe World Cancer Awareness Week from May 24 to 31. The organisation, in a bid to create cancer awareness, is conducting competitions in drawing, poster making and slogan writing and a free oral cancer check-up camp.
