Boy dies, hospital attacked

Malda, April 15: The Bhaluka Grameen Hospital in Ratua was ransacked today following the death of an 11-year-old boy who had been allegedly left unattended by doctors there.

Santosh Parihar had gone under water in a village pond and was soon rescued by people who took the boy to the hospital, which is barely 300 metres away. The villagers alleged that they had waited for two hours, but no doctor came and the boy died. They said the hospital, located 45km from here, had three physicians, but none was present.

The irate people ransacked the doctors’ chambers and smashed the windowpanes. Chief medical officer of health, Malda, Srikanta Roy, has ordered a probe.


Marijuana

Cooch Behar: Dinhata police arrested Safiqul Haq, 24, from Balarampur Road on Tuesday night while he was smuggling 20kg of marijuana to Bangladesh. The police said Haq was a resident of Nayarhat village on the border. He was riding a motorcycle when the arrest was made.


Child suicide

Islampur: Md Sazzad, a 12-year boy, committed suicide after consuming poison at his residence in Tartala on Tuesday evening.


Lathicharge

Jalpaiguri: Twelve people were injured when BSF jawans lathi-charged a group of people at Kukurjan near Rajganj on Wednesday. The BSF said the villagers had gathered for a fair, violating an order which prohibited the assembling of people.


Body found

Islampur: The Dalkhola GRP recovered the body of an unidentified man from Gunjaria station on Wednesday.


Five hurt

Balurghat: Five persons were injured in a clash between two groups of people over the possession of a plot of land at Sahapukur near Kumarganj on Wednesday.
