NCP to back Bangshibadan

Cooch Behar, April 5: The Greater Cooch Behar Democratic Party today announced names of leaders who would campaign for its Lok Sabha candidate Bangshibadan Barman, now in jail.

At a news conference, Greater Cooch Behar party president Ashutosh Barma said the NCP had supported their cause and its leader P.A. Sangma would campaign for Bangshibadan.

After the BJP-Gorkha Janmukti Morcha entente at the hills over the Gorkhaland, the NCPs support to the Greater Cooch Behar party over the demand for a separate state has become a point of discussion in the political circle here.

Greater Cooch Behar party general secretary Phanindranath Barman said Cooch Behar was a C category state in the past. We want to get back that status. We held talks with Sangma at Siliguri. His private secretary Ratan Som had also met us at a Cooch Behar hotel for a detailed discussion.

Joachim Buxla, who had quit the RSP after being denied a ticket from Alipurduar, and Kamtapur Progressive Party (KPP) leader Atul Roy will also campaign for Bangshibadan who will file his nomination tomorrow, Barma said.

Supporters of the Greater Cooch Behar party, KPP and the NCP brought out a rally in Dinhata town today in support of Bangshibadan.

District secretary of the NCP Usha Roy refused to comment on whether the move would jeopardise the Lefts attempt to form a third front.

It is yet to be seen which front will form the government at the Centre. For the time being, we have been extending support to the regional parties, she said.
