Pathfinder

Courses: It offers three types of packages. The first is a one-year programme (classroom and test series) for Class XII students, the second a two-year programme (classroom and test series) for Plus Two students, and the third a postal course. There is something else too — a study kit that provides for the test programme only.

Claim to fame: Pathfinder has been churning out WBJEE toppers for the last 17 years. This includes last year’s first and second rank holders, Kamirul Islam and Subhrashish Guha Neogi.

 

Aakash Institute

(www.aakashinstitute.com)

Courses: It offers classroom learning as well as distance learning courses. Its two-year classroom programme starts after the Class X board exam results are out. Students may attend classes during weekends or weekdays, depending on their preference. There are two one-year courses — one for all medical entrances and the other for WBJEE.

Claim to fame: For the past 13 years, Aakash has been producing first rankers of some of the toughest entrance exams. More than 200 cleared WBJEE in 2008. Last year’s stars include Alakananda Behera (AIIMS entrance topper in the SC category) and Debashis Mukherjee (fourth in AIPMT, third in WBJEE and fourth in Jipmer.

 

Guidance Academy

Courses: It offers classroom learning as well as distance learning courses. The one-year classroom programme is for Class XII students and high school graduates. Class XI students can avail of a one-year test programme.

Claim to fame: It offers free training to 400 WBJEE aspirants belonging to the minority communities in West Bengal. Five among the top 10 performers in WBJEE 2007 were from this institute.

 

NICS

(P-38 Lake Town, Block B, Calcutta-700089)

Courses: There is a one-year classroom programme for WBJEE aspirants as well as a two-year classroom programme, where students are coached for board as well entrance exams. NICS also offers a postal course and an exclusive ranker’s test series.

Claim to fame: Six among the top 10 WBJEE 2007 candidates were from NICS. It offers free training to 400 WBJEE aspirants belonging to the minority communities in West Bengal.

 

Takshyashila

(50, South End Park, Calcutta-700029)

Courses: It has two classroom courses for WBJEE aspirants — a one-year test series for Class XII students and a two-year series for Class XI students. It also has a distance learning programme.

Claim to fame: All 45 students were able to crack WBJEE last year.

 

Rainbow Guidance Centre

(166/C/515/1 Lake Gardens, Calcutta-700045)

Courses: The institute offers module-based test series, classroom coaching and distance learning programmes. It plans to start a residential coaching centre soon, wherein students would be provided 24x7 guidance.

Claim to fame: 200 students from Rainbow managed to crack WBJEE last year.
