Two killed in bus mishap

Siliguri, Feb.22: Two passengers of a private bus, one of them a 22-year-old woman, were killed and 28 were injured after the vehicle turned on its side at Paharpur this afternoon.

The injured passengers were taken to Jalpaiguri district hospital. Six of the injured were later shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.

The Cooch Behar-bound bus from Siliguri was carrying at least 30 passengers. At Paharpur More, 44km from here and on State Highway 12A, the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Pinki Pal, 22, and an unidentified man, were pronounced dead at the Jalpaiguri hospital.

“Our bus was going at a high speed and when it tried to overtake another bus, the driver lose control and our vehicle turned on its side,” said Atanu Sarkar, a resident of Falakata, from his bed at the Jalpaiguri hospital.

After the accident, a fire engine and police rushed to the spot to rescue the injured passengers. “Most of the passengers suffered bruises and cuts. They were released after first aid. Six persons have been shifted to the medical college. They have suffered head injuries with multiple fractures and cuts,” Mrinal Acharya, the doctor on duty at the Jalpaiguri hospital, said.
