Perhaps the greatest living sarod player, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan had always been averse to the idea of the confluence of Western and Indian classical music genres. Yet, when the Edinburgh-based Scottish Chamber Orchestra approached him to write an hour-long symphony, he dedicated two years to the project. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra worked together with the sarod maestro during this period to produce a work, the first concerto for sarod in the history of the instrument, that truly brings together Eastern and Western music tradition at the highest level. Based on some of the Ustad’s existing compositions, Samaagam is a concerto which aims to spread the message of love, peace and universal brotherhood. Performed for the first time at The City of London Festival last year, this evening’s presentation of Samaagam is part of an ongoing tour covering the major cities of India. It is notated and conducted by David Murphy, who, with his focus on North Indian talas and ragas, effortlessly bridges the gap between the two genres. Hosted by 100 Pipers Pure Music.
Event: A concert of sarod and Western music orchestra
