Trees pruned illegally
Branches more than eight inches in diameter of about 20 trees on Ballygunge Circular Road were chopped off on Wednesday. According to Rohan Chakravarty, an NGO member, those who were felling the branches said they had permission from the civic body. Cutting trees and trimming branches more than 4 inches in diameter are prohibited without the forest department’s consent. “I am looking into why branches of more than the prescribed thickness were trimmed,” said mayoral council member (parks and gardens) Faiyaz Ahmed Khan.
Murder accused held
Wakil Quarasi, 28, was arrested in Jamshedpur on Wednesday night on the charge of murdering Howrah-resident Sheikh Jainul Abadin. olice said Abadin was killed on January 22 in a Howrah club after he deposed against Wakil and Wasim Quarasi in a rape case. The duo had often threatened Abadin with dire consequences if he deposed against them. akil was produced in Howrah CJM court on Thursday and sent to police custody for 10 days. Wasim, the other main accused, is absconding.
Team visit
A three-member Medical Council of India team started its three-day visit to the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research and SSKM Hospital on Thursday. The team visited various departments of the institute and met officials.
Arms dealer
Anupam Chowdhury, the owner of the Baguiati house from where a huge cache of arms and ammunition was seized on January 25, was produced in court on Thursday and remanded in judicial custody till February 19.
Tanning training
The state has allotted a 2,700sq m plot in the Calcutta Leather Complex in Bantala to set up the Tanning Training and Service Centre with help from Italy. S.S. Kumar, the chairman of the Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology, said this on Thursday.
