Stretcher death

Alappuzha, Feb. 1 (PTI): A heart patient died allegedly after falling from a stretcher while he was being moved to the ICU at a local government hospital today.

The incident sparked protests by the local people who were pacified by the district collector who said that an inquiry would be held, police sources said. Abdul Khadar, 49, was admitted two days ago after he suffered a heart attack.

Preity decibel

Mumbai (PTI): A police patrol team went to Preity Zinta’s house at Khar in the wee hours of Sunday after nearby slum-dwellers repeatedly informed the local police station about the high decibel levels at her birthday party. No complaint has been lodged, a police officer said.

Rome attack

Rome (AFP): An Indian immigrant was beaten and set on fire early on Sunday near Rome. He is in a serious condition, Italian police said. The 35-year-old homeless man was sleeping in Nettuno station when several people beat him brutally before setting him on fire with petrol. The police are investigating whether it was an anti-immigrant attack or a robbery attempt.

Cop arrest

Jammu (PTI): A constable has been arrested for allegedly firing in the air with his licensed pistol to scare away those with whom he had a dispute over a plot. Gourav Sharma had entered into a verbal duel with two women as both parties claimed the land.

Goa case

Panaji (PTI): A social activist has filed a contempt petition against inspector Ramesh Gaonkar for failing to investigate the role of Fiona McKeown in the death of her teenage daughter Scarlett Keeling who was found dead in Goa.

Kalka rail

Shimla (PTI): The century-old Kalka-Shimla Rail has been recommended for inclusion in Unesco’s heritage list for its historical and cultural importance, Rajesh Agarwal, executive director of the railway ministry, said. If included, Himachal would have the distinction of having two railway lines in the list.
