Life for stabbing youth

Siliguri, Jan. 30: The judge of fast track second court, Aparajita Ghosh, today sentenced Gulab Sha of Shibnagar to rigorous life imprisonment for murder.

Gulab was arrested on December 17, 2006, for stabbing to death Pankaj Pathak, a youth of the locality after an altercation. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Gulab, failing which he will have to spend six more months in jail.


New bridge

Siliguri: State urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya inaugurated a bridge over the Fuleswari river connecting Deshbandhupara and Bharatnagar on Friday. Mayor Nurul Islam and Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad sabhadhipati Mani Thapa were also present at the function.


Fake notes

Siliguri: The SSB arrested Bhakta Rajbanshi of Jamriguri in Nepal from Tarabari, 40km from here, on Friday. Eighty-one counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination were seized from him.


Bangla arrest

Siliguri: Md Zameer, a Bangladeshi, was arrested from Hawkers’ Corner on Thursday. Police seized $50 from him. Police said Zameer was with three other Bangladeshis, who have fled .


Career fair

Siliguri: Saturday Times Education and Career, a programme of the state department of youth affairs in association with the UK-based Saturday Times, organised a seminar at the Kanchenjungha Stadium hall here on Friday. The organisation is providing educational facilities for skill development of youths of the state and organising career counselling sessions.


Climate talks

Gangtok: Shyam Saran, the special envoy to the Prime Minister on climate change, is scheduled to arrive in Sikkim on a three-day visit beginning Saturday. He will hold talks on environment and climatic changes in the state. The additional chief secretary will represent the state during the meeting.
