Girls lap up Wipro jobs

Ranchi, Jan. 29: Ban or no ban, Wipro still lives up to its reputation of being a major campus recruiter.

Today, the company visited Ranchi Women’s College for recruiting students in its business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. Ten girls were picked up after a series of interviews.

Around 120 students from all the three departments — science, commerce and arts — participated in the interview that was conducted at the seminar hall of science block.

Neena Sahay, the placement officer of Ranchi Women’s College, who assisted officials of the IT major in conducting the interview said: “The students were subjected to four rounds of testing. The first was the communication skills round in which the students’ grip on grammar, language and accent was tested. This was followed by a reading round that saw candidates reading out a given passage. The third was the telephonic round in which candidates were interviewed over telephone by officials at the company’s eastern headquarters in Calcutta while the final round was a written one, in which students had to appear for a technical test. Those who cleared the previous rounds were eligible for the subsequent ones.”

Campus relation manager of Wipro Yugeen Gurung and test administrator Gautam were present at today’s campus interview.

The selected girls were handed over offer letters on the spot. They were offered a pay package of Rs 1.5 lakh per annum, besides a monthly incentive of around Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000. The candidates will have to undergo a two-month training in Calcutta. Thereafter, they will be placed in the pharmaceutical, IT and finance departments of BPO.

The fact that the World Bank has imposed a ban on Wipro for “providing improper benefits to bank staff” did little to dampen the spirits of the students. To the contrary, they were thrilled to have bagged a job with the company.

“I am very happy to have secured my first job at a reputable concern like Wipro. The idea of working on night shifts excites me,” said Smriti, one of the candidates.

In September last year, Wipro had recruited eleven students from the same college via campus interview.
