Three suicides in steel city

Jamshedpur, Jan. 29: Three cases of death by hanging — including a youth, a pregnant woman and a 40-year-old — at different places were reported today.

At Vidya Sagar Path in Bhatia Bustee, a 22-year-old youth from Calcutta was found hanging from the ceiling of his house early this morning. An employee of Calcutta-based Inder Instrument Private Limited, Abhijit Ghosh had been posted at the Jamshedpur office of the company for seven months. Originally a resident of Dumdum in Calcutta, he lived alone in a rented house in Bhatia Bustee.

Abhijit’s mother had called him up in the morning but when he did not respond, she called up his boss Anjan Pradhan.

Pradhan, who resides in Sidhgora, rushed to Vidya Sagar Path. The room was bolted from inside and Pradhan — with the help of Abhijit’s neighbours — had to break open the door.

Officer in charge of Kadma police station Sudhir Kumar said the body was recovered at 9.30am. They suspected that the youth committed suicide between midnight and 1am. The police have not found any suicide note.

Abhijit’s parents have left for Jamshedpur while the police have already conducted a postmortem.

“The reason behind the suicide could not be ascertained as the deceased has not left any suicide note,” said a police officer, adding that they expect some breakthrough after Abhijit’s parents are interrogated.

In another incident, a newly wed woman killed herself in her Azadnagar home under Mango police station this morning.

Asif Hussain’s wife Seema Kauser, the victim, was five months pregnant.

Asif said his wife was normal when he left for work in the morning. But when he reached his office he got a call from his sister saying Seema had attempted suicide and they were taking her to a nursing home. “I rushed to the nursing home but came to know that she has been referred to MGM Medical College and Hospital,” said Asif.

At MGM, she was declared brought dead.

Abdul Razaque, the father of the deceased, has lodged an FIR with Mango police station alleging that Seema’s husband and in-laws had killed her for dowry.

The police have registered a case and started investigations.

The third case of suicide was reported from Kharangajhar in Telco.

Forty-year-old Ravi Singh was found hanging from a rod in his residence. The police have recovered the body and sent it for postmortem to MGM Medical College.
