Guild faction
Fourteen members of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild have spoken out against the office-bearers and formed an organisation called the Consortium for Books and Culture. It will focus on the “cultural aspects of the book trade, which has been neglected by the Guild”, said member Anil Acharya, of Anushtup. The 14, who will retain membership of the guild, have accused the Book Fair organisers of functioning under the “stranglehold of the government”.
Suicide
A homemaker committed suicide on Wednesday by consuming pesticide in her in-laws’ house in Maniktala. Priya Saha, 21, was taken to RG Kar Hospital where she was declared dead. Husband Sibash was arrested on torture charge.
Trains hit
Train services on the Budge Budge section of Sealdah (South) was suspended for over four hours from 8am on Wednesday as passengers blocked the tracks at Nungi to protest late running of trains.
