Worker arrested for felling tree
A labourer engaged by a civic contractor was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly felling a tree in Shyampukur. He was arrested following a complaint from the state forest department. Mayoral council member (parks and gardens) Faiyaz Ahmed Khan said 11 trees needed to be felled to lay a sewage line in the area under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. He admitted that the civic authorities had not obtained a clearance from the forest department.
Train service restored
Three North India-bound trains from Calcutta that were cancelled or short-terminated because of fog will be restored to their normal routes from February 1, Eastern Railway officials said on Tuesday. The trains are the Howrah-Sriganganagar Toofan Express, Calcutta-Delhi Lalquila Express and the Howrah-Amritsar Express.
Molestation
Swapan Das, 28, was arrested in Sonarpur on Sunday night for allegedly molesting his 17-year-old niece. Police said Swapan and his elder brother had quarrelled over land on Saturday night.
Flight cancelled
The Jet Airways’s Calcutta-Bagdogra flight was cancelled on Tuesday morning because of bad weather in Bagdogra. Angry passengers pointed out that other airlines had operated their flights to Bagdogra. Jet officials said the stranded fliers would be accommodated on Wednesday’s flight.
Hospital fracas
Relatives of Abdul Khaled, a 45-year-old Beniapukur resident who died at National Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday, alleged that he was not given adequate oxygen. Khaled had suffered a cardiac arrest.
