Imphal, Jan. 15: The Manipur unit of the BJP today recommended former chief minister Wahengbam Nipamacha Singh’s name to the party’s central election committee as the BJP candidate for the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat.
“The BJP political affairs committee today recommended former chief minister Wahengbam Nipamacha Singh’s name as the party candidate in the Inner Manipur seat for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections,” a source in the party said.
The state unit is, however, yet to recommend any name for the Outer Manipur seat.
The recommendation of Nipamacha Singh’s name came a day after the BJP organisational secretary in-charge of the Northeast, P. Chandrashekhar Rao, announced in Imphal that the BJP would contest both the seats in Manipur.
The BJP leader, while announcing that the party would contest both the seats, said they were seeking the support of regional parties in Manipur.
“Positive signals are coming in,” the leader said.
Nipamacha Singh is a new entrant to the BJP.
He was the president of the Manipur unit of the RJD before joining the BJP on December 3.
Nipamacha Singh is the second former chief minister to join the BJP this year.
Former chief minister R.K. Dorendro Singh, who contested unsuccessfully on a Manipur Peoples Party ticket in the last state Assembly election, joined the BJP on October 14.
The BJP is the first political party in Manipur to name a candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
