Militant remand

An NDFB militant, Aghai Basumatary, arrested from Goalpara last month for his alleged involvement in the October 30 serial blasts, was remanded in judicial custody after he was produced in the court on Thursday.

Law exams

The preliminary and final examinations of the three-year law course under Gauhati University will be held from January 29. A GU official on Thursday said there would be a minimum gap of three days between two papers as ordered by Gauhati High Court.

Property tax

GMC chief administrator Robin Bordoloi on Thursday said the corporation would soon hold discussions with NGOs and senior citizens who are protesting against the hike in property tax. The decision was taken after GDD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued an instruction on Monday.

Book fair

The Publication Board, Assam, on Thursday said more than 5 lakh books were sold and around 2 lakh people visited the 23rd edition of Guwahati Book Fair which concluded recently.

Demand

The Guwahati Mahanagar Unnayan Samiti on Thursday demanded that the GMC and the Kamrup (metro) district administration must immediately create proper parking lots in busy areas.

Surgery

The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Thursday said the next phase of coronary artery bypass graft or open-heart surgery would be conducted at the hospital from January 28 to February 1. Principal M.M. Deka said the surgery would be free for poor.

Celebration

The 52nd foundation day of the Assam Government Pensioners’ Association will be celebrated at the Pensioners’ Bhawan, Chandmari, on Saturday, an office- bearer of the association said on Thursday. Meghalaya Governor R.S. Mushahary will inaugurate the function.
