Imphal, Jan. 12: Md Abid Ahmed of Assam Regimental Centre, Shillong, won the top spot in the 2nd Thambalnu Men’s Open Half Marathon Championship today.
Abid Ahmed clocked 1:16.27 hours for the title while K. Jemson, also of Assam Regimental Centre, came second with 1:16.33 hours and S. Lokendro Singh of All Manipur Ethno Socio-Cultural Organisation finished third with 1:16.38 hours.
Altogether 80 participants took part in the half marathon, which was flagged off by Manipur MP T. Meinya from the starting point at Manipur University gate, Canchipur, and culminated at Yairipok Bishnunaha.
Gold Cup football
Oil India Football Club, Duliajan, today edged past George Telegraph, Calcutta, by a single goal to win the 4th Oil India Challenge Gold Cup Football Tournament at Nehru Maidan in Duliajan, reports our correspondent from Dibrugarh.
Both the teams failed to score during regulation time and the match went into extra time. Midfielder H.L. Routa scored the lone goal in the 22nd minute of extra time.
Routa capitalised on a calculated minus by F. Wary from the right flank and scored through a powerful ground shot.
Apart from the top three runners, others who featured among the top 10 include M. Romiyo Singh (1:16.47 hours), Kh. Chinglen Singh (1:18.02), Kh. Premjit Singh (1:18.55), L. Nabachandra Singh (1:20.01), Y. Inao Singh (1:20.26), L. Ranjan Singh (1:20.34) and H. Sanajaoba Singh (1:21.03).
Two young athletes, K. Surchandra Singh and L. Samananda Singh, and two veterans, Kh. Okendrajit Singh and Y. Tiken Singh, were also feted.
