2 held for Howrah trader’s murder
Two men, Willam Dungdung and Mohammed Gopi, were arrested in connection with the murder of Bikash Agarwal, a Howrah trader who was shot on December 28 while returning with his wife from a late-night show of Ghajini. The residents of Pilkhana were produced in court on Monday and sent to police custody for seven days.
Power disruption
Power supply may be disrupted between 8am and 4pm on Tuesday in Belur because of maintenance work. The Belur Bazar, Abhay Guha Road, Girish Ghosh Road, Ghusury, Kali Mazumder Road, Chandalpara, Naskarpara, JN Mukherjee Road and Rajen Sett Lane areas are likely to be affected.
Trains cancelled
Train services in the Krishnagar-Lalgola section of Eastern Railway’s Sealdah division were disrupted from 4.40am to 5.30pm on Monday as residents blocked the tracks at Bhabta station, demanding better civic amenities.

Road death
Farida Bibi, 35, was run over by a trailer on Hyde Road at 2.55pm on Monday. The resident of the Brace Bridge area was taken to SSKM Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. The driver of the trailer fled but the vehicle was impounded. The body was sent for post-mortem.
Protesters held
Around 400 members of the All Bengal Electricity Consumers’ Association were arrested on Rani Rashmoni Avenue on Monday afternoon for protesting a hike in the electricity surcharge and power-cuts. They were produced before a magistrate and released.
Writers’ breach
Fourteen supporters of the pro-SUCI All Bengal Consumers’ Association were arrested on Monday afternoon for trying to enter Writers’ Buildings from near the Brabourne Road-India Exchange Place crossing. They were arrested for violating prohibitory orders.
Agitation
Nearly 1,000 encroachers of Belgachhia trenching ground in Liluah, Howrah, demonstrated before the district magistrate’s office demanding rehabilitation.
hey also blocked Mahatma Gandhi Road near the Howrah Municipal Corporation building. Calcutta High Court, in an order on a PIL filed by green activist Subhash Dutta, had asked the district administration to remove encroachments from the trenching ground by January 15.
