Asteroid crater

New Delhi, Jan. 11 (PTI): Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh has thrown up one of the earth’s oldest impact craters, created by an asteroid hit 2,500 million years ago.

The crater — an “impact structure” in technical jargon since erosion has wiped out many of its original features — is 11km in diameter and is Asia’s largest. An Indian geologist discovered it near Dhala village.

Engineer

Lucknow (PTI): Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday found a whip allegedly used for beating up PWD engineer M.K. Gupta in Auraiya. F ormerBSP district president Yogendra Dohre alias Bhatia, who is in remand, told the police about the whip. Dohre confessed to having used it along with BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari.

Dowry ruling

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court has held that in case of a dowry death, prosecution does not need to prove that there was an agreement for dowry between the families. The court said that if such agreements were accepted then no offender could be convicted.

‘Lover’ killed

Lucknow (PTI): A man hit his teenaged daughter and her boyfriend with bricks, killing the young man, when he allegedly found them in a compromising position. The girl is critical and is admitted at a trauma centre. Lala Ram, a guard at a construction site, has been detained.

Fake notes

Jammu (PTI): A policeman has alleged that he was given fake currency while withdrawing his salary from a Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch in Poonch district. Mohammad Rafeeq said he received 14 fake Rs 500 notes. The manager and cashiers have been questioned and the bank records checked. An investigation has been ordered.

Aussie theft

Dehra Dun (PTI): An Australian woman’s bag was snatched in a market in Dehra Dun on Saturday. Emlie Jaffery had Rs 15,000 in cash and other valuables in the bag. Police are searching for the thief.
