Violence over assault

Two buses were damaged by members of Ajoy Sanhati club in Haridevpur after murder accused Chhotka Das, 30, allegedly assaulted its secretary Hillol Basu in a drunken state on Sunday evening and fled. Basu had to be admitted to a private hospital. The members of the club blocked MG Road and forced shops to down shutters. Officers of Thakurpukur police station could not persuade the protesters to withdraw the blockade till late on Sunday.

Delhi train delayed

The Delhi-bound Poorva Express will leave Howrah at 12.40am on Monday instead of 8.05am because of the delay in the arrival of the corresponding train owing to fog, said an Eastern Railway official on Sunday.

Air fare

Emirates has revised fares to various destinations from Calcutta. Return fares on economy class to Dubai, London and New York will be Rs 22,000, Rs 35,000 and Rs 43,990 (all excluding airport charges), respectively, said an official.

Crime watch

Sixteen teams of eight persons each were formed in the Baguiati police station area to keep an eye on crime. Joy Biswas, the sub-divisional police officer of Barasat, said the teams would maintain night vigil and prevent hooch sale.

Collision

Balaram Hatui, a 48-year-old resident of Birbhum, was arrested after the lorry he was driving collided with a pick-up truck at the crossing of MG Road and CR Avenue early on Sunday. Hatui, his helper and the three occupants of the pick-up truck sustained injuries. The injured were taken to Medical College and Hospital. The three in the pick-up truck were admitted.

Power supply

Power supply may be disrupted in Mahestala between 9am and 2pm on Monday owing to maintenance work by CESC. Moynagarh, Raipur, Ashuti, Khanberia, Ashuti Main Road, Sukhdebpur, Vidyasagar Park, Gauripur, Sibarampore, Bulbul Park, Sarada Park, Banerjeehat, Gangarampur, Rajpur Muftipara, Mahesh Gate and adjoining areas are likely to be affected.

Medicine haul

Saraful Hossein, 22 and Sabir Ali, 28, were arrested on Saturday night in a raid on a dispensary in Barasat, where medicines worth over a lakh were stocked. Police said drugs that are not meant to be sold in the open market were seized. They may have been procured from government hospitals.
