Speeding bus kills 1

Calcutta, Jan. 10: A speeding private bus ran over a man on Jawaharlal Nehru Road this evening when he was returning from his routine evening stroll.

The route 12C bus hit Aloke Poddar, a 50-year-old businessman, from behind at the intersection of JL Nehru Road and Shakespeare Sarani. Poddar was returning to his Lord Sinha Road home from the Maidan. The driver has been arrested and the bus seized. Poddar was the third to come under a speeding bus during the road safety week that began on January 5.

Youth drowns

Calcutta: A youth who had gone on a picnic to the Sunderbans drowned after he slipped and fell from a mechanised boat on Saturday. Police said Rajesh Mishra, 21, fell into the Matla near Sajnekhali. He had gone for the picnic with 30 others. A search is on for the body.

Suicide

Midnapore: A newly-married couple committed suicide on Friday night by hanging from a tree near Ghatal town in West Midnapore. Police said Sudip Samanta, 25, and Tanushri,17, had married in a temple on December 24 as the groom’s family did not approve of the match.
