Kidnap bid: four arrested

Islampur, Jan. 8: Four persons were arrested at Itahar last night for trying to abduct a youth. The arrests and rescue of the youth were made in a joint operation by Karandighi and Itahar police.

D. Lepcha, the Islampur subdivisional police officer, said the arrested persons are residents of Kaliachak of Malda and they had bundled Rajkumar Mondal into a vehicle at Bikarhat in Karandighi and fled. The vehicle was intercepted at Itahar and the youth was rescued.


Hindi school

Siliguri: The Bengal urban development minister, Asok Bhattacharya, laid the foundation of a Hindi primary school at New Pokaijote here on Thursday. The school will be built with the help of Sarva Shiksha Mission and Rs 5.40 lakh will be spent for the project.


Karate team

Siliguri: Bengal Karate Academy announced its eight-member team for the forthcoming state championship to be held at Dumdum in Calcutta on January 10 and 11. Sahadev Burman will be the coach of the team.


District trip

Alipurduar: A 15-member delegation of the Alipurduar Zilla Nirman Dabi Mancha, an organisation spearheading a movement for a separate district of Alipurduar, left for Calcutta on Thursday to press for its demand. The team members will meet state chief secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti and a three-member cabinet core committee on Friday.


Shock

Alipurduar: Purba Lama (10), a resident of Jaigaon, was admitted to Alipurduar Hospital on Thursday evening after he touched an electric pole from which current was flowing and fell unconscious.


Cricket wins

Siliguri: Kendriya Vidyalaya Bengdubi and Royal Academy have won their respective matches at the Third Surendra Agarwal Memorial Inter School Cricket Tournament held at the Delhi Public School ground on Thursday.
