Woman waits for justice
- Physically challenged & thrown off bus, cops silent

Balurghat, Jan. 6: A physically challenged woman has been doing the rounds of the police station here for the past 15 days for justice she is yet to get after being thrown off a moving bus by the conductor and the cleaner.

Ranjana Seal, who is paralytic on the left hand and leg since 2005 and needs support while walking, said although she lodged a police complaint on December 24 nothing has been done against the accused.

A day earlier, the middle-aged woman from Fakirganj had come to Balurghat for a health check-up. She had boarded a private bus — Ma Lakshmi (registration number WB 612393) — to take her back home, 40km from here.

“As soon as I boarded the bus, the driver yelled at me, pushing me aside and asking me to get off. The bus had started moving and to keep my balance I tried to hold on to the cleaner who threw me aside and on to the road. I fell to the ground. Some local people came to my rescue,” said Ranjana, who has a disability card issued by the health department.

“I went to the police, expecting justice. But they seem to have done nothing so far. I visited the Balurghat police station even this morning,” said Ranjana.

The town officer of the police station Amitabha Das said the woman would be taken to the bus stop for an inquiry.

The owner of the bus, Dulal Roy, and conductor Pradip Roy claimed that the charges were “false and motivated”.

The Citu said it would not stand by the accused if the charges against them were established. “It is our general instruction to all bus workers to be courteous to the aged and physically challenged people,” said Hiren Saha, a Citu leader and a member of the regional transport authority. The district secretary of the bus owners’ association, Ashok Chowdhury, said: “It is an unpardonable offence, if any such thing had really taken place. But before I can comment further, I shall have to verify it.”

Additional district superintendent of police Imran Wahab wondered why the police had not yet taken any action. “Since it has come to my notice, I must ensure justice to the physically challenged woman,” Wahab said.
