Engineer remand

Auraiya, Jan. 6 (PTI): BSP leader Yogendra Dohore, accused in the PWD engineer murder case, surrendered before a magistrate’s court today and was remanded in six days’ judicial custody.

Dohore alias Bhatia was on the run. He and BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari had allegedly tortured and murdered M.K. Gupta. A reward of Rs 2,500 had been declared for information about Dohore.

Fog delays

New Delhi (PTI): Heavy fog hit air and rail traffic in Delhi on Tuesday morning with over 50 flights delayed and 18 cancelled. Forty trains were running late and several others were rescheduled in the morning, officials said.

Girl child day

New Delhi (PTI): The government will declare January 24 as National Girl Child Day to create awareness about female foeticide, domestic violence and malnutrition. Women and child development minister Renuka Chowdhury will make the announcement on January 19.

Record haul

New Delhi (PTI): Over 800 people were arrested in Delhi last year on charges of peddling or possessing drugs, according to Delhi police’s crime data for 2008. The data showed that 60kg of heroin and 950kg of ganja were seized. The narcotics branch registered 118 drug peddling cases.

Broker held

Moga (PTI): A share broker was arrested on Tuesday on charges of cheating and forgery. Kuldeep Singh, his wife Kulwinder Kaur and one of their employees, Amman, have been accused of cheating Lakhbir Singh, a resident of Moga, of Rs 25 lakh. Kuldeep’s wife and Amman are on the run, police said.

Shrine threat

Sabarimala (PTI): Security at the Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala in Kerala has been stepped up following a bomb threat by an anonymous caller, police said on Tuesday. All vehicles to Sabarimala are being searched at two check points and pilgrims are being scanned with metal detectors, the police said.
