Cooch Behar, Jan. 5: A gang of armed robbers looted cash and gold ornaments from the house of a former gram panchayat pradhan of the CPM at Ramthenga in Ghoksadanga today.
The robbers raided Sukhodananda Dhar’s house around 2am and broke open the gate with a log. They entered the room of the CPM leader’s younger son Samir and hit him on the head with an iron rod.
“I was deep in sleep when I heard some people hitting the door with a log, shouting haiya ho. Before I could make out anything, they broke open the room,” Samir said. “They pointed a gun at my seven-year-old son and took away seven bhori of gold (81.62 gram), two mobile phones and Rs 19,500.”
Samir was taken to the Ghoksadanga health centre where he had to be given five stitches.
The gang members then broke open Samir’s elder brother Alok’s room and took away gold ornaments of two bhori (23.32 gram). Five or six members of the gang were inside the house. “I am not sure how many others were waiting outside.”
Srinivas Gope, a local committee member of the CPM, demanded immediate arrest of the robbers. “We have not come across such a daring dacoity in the past two three years,” he said.
The subdivisional police officer of Mathabhanga, Ananda Roy, said an inquiry was on. “Efforts are being made to identify the gang.”
No one has been arrested.
