Ranchi, Jan. 4: The picture was not that rosy at the 74th winter rose show this year.
The event recorded a drop in the number of participants. While there were 700-900 entries last year, the figure was 400 this year.
Again, only 1,200 blooms were showcased this year while it was 2,000 last year. A delayed winter is being cited as the reason behind the lukewarm response.
The show was held at multipurpose hall in Ranchi Club on Sunday. Entries had started pouring from yesterday. The chief guest was state election commissioner M.K. Mandal.
Earlier, the Rose Society of Ranchi used to receive an overwhelming response from schools, colleges, Raj Bhavan, Nakshatra Van, Jharkhand Mineral Development Corporation, Ranchi Club, Sidho Kanho Park, airport, Davis Institute of Psychiatry, individual growers, small growers and novices.
Besides, there was also outstation participation from Nagpur, Rourkela, Dhanbad and Jamshedpur.
But in stark contrast, this year, key participants such as Raj Bhavan, Nakshatra Van and Sidho Kanho Park were missing. Even in individual categories, the number of entries was less. Outstation participation had taken a hit as well.
Secretary of the Rose Society of Ranchi H.P. Behl said: “This year, the flowers bloomed before the arrival of winter and most of them were wilted by the time we held the show.” However, he was hopeful that the number of entries would be greater at the spring rose show scheduled to be held in March.
At today’s exhibition, the blooms displayed were Paradise, Double delight, Ace up Hearts, Toro, Laura, Peter Franklin Feld, Ledger Field, Garden Party, John F. Kennedy, Golden Medallion and Stripe Rose. The variety of roses included potted, single bloom, fragrant bloom, striped species, deep pink, orange and red roses. Handicraft items made with roses were also displayed.
Peter Franklin Feld, a deep pink rose, of Heavy Engineering Corporation Limited was crowned the king while white-and-pink Garden Party of Ranchi Club was adjudged the queen.
In the individual categories, the first prize went to Gopal Sahu while the second and third prizes were won by Rakesh Kumar Singh and Neyaz Ahmed, respectively.
