Creations in clay
Ceramic, derived from the Greek word keramikos (meaning, potter’s clay), covers inorganic and non-metallic materials formed by the action of heat. The most important of these are traditional clays, made into pottery, bricks, tiles and the like, along with cements and glass. One of Japan’s oldest art forms, Japanese pottery and porcelain dates back to the Neolithic period. Over centuries, its kilns have produced an extraordinary variety of ceramic ware like earthenware, pottery, stoneware, glazed pottery and glazed stoneware. Wheel and Kiln, the ongoing exhibition of ceramic works by Indian and Japanese artists, has on display an assortment of beautiful and innovative ceramic wares by Mahito Kudo, Kirtida Mekani and Golden Bridge. Platters, bowls, vases and pots — a whole range of breathtaking works of art in clay express the sheer dexterity of the potters’ deft hands. They have created the best in clay work, taking care of fine details that give a dynamic contour to each piece, rendering it unique. Each of them has a strong penchant towards different interpretations of clay — the quiet beauty that touches the inner senses or the elegant beauty that does not come from flashy colour or form, but from a feeling of balance.
