The stuff of dreams

How would you like to sink into a thick spring mattress — which not only makes for a great bedfellow — but costs a cool Rs 4 lakh? A perfect accompaniment to this would be firm pillows that will ensure you never suffer a stiff-neck. And insomnia doesn’t stand a chance if you just cover up and snuggle into a buttery soft duvet.

Welcome to a world of premium bed accessories — of detailed and extensive pillow menus and giant-sized mattresses that are padded with foam that NASA once created for its space programme. There are pillows that might rid you of chronic snoring and combination mattresses that are hard on one side and soft at the other. Just choose your favourite side of the bed.

Gone are the days when a basic bed was a charpoy and the must-have mattress was all of six inches thick.

Says Vasanthi Ram, interior designer at Mon Chateau, a home store in Bangalore specialising in luxury American furnishings: “Bed accessories, once considered utilitarian, have become the objects of desire. With stress levels and health issues on the rise, selecting the right bedding has become vital and can make all the difference to how you sleep.” And yes, these can be customised depending on individual requirements.

Designer mattresses, mattress-toppers, duvets and pillows doing the rounds are the stuff of dreams. Made from the finest fibres or high-density foam, they aim to help you wave a final goodbye to spine-related problems. Statutory warning: be prepared to shell out generously as prices are steep.

At the top of the heap, there’s the Royal-Pedic mattress from Mon Chateau which uses top-notch materials like organic cotton from Texas, wool from France, latex from Indonesia and box-springs from Switzerland. Prices range from Rs 80,000 to Rs 4 lakh depending on the size of the mattress. (And thankfully they come with a 10-year warranty).

Says Ram: “These are giant-sized mattresses for spacious bedrooms and are 8in-8 1/2in thick.” Ram adds: “The mattresses provide orthopaedic support and since they use only natural materials, they are antibacterial and resistant to dust mites.”

And when you go pillow shopping at Hush, a ‘Sleep Studio’ in Mumbai, you can actually lie around in bed for an hour before you decide what makes you most comfortable. Thereafter, choose from an array of pillow menus that brim over with pillows made from specially imported silky fibre. The pillows come in various categories: super-soft, soft, standard, slim and firm (Rs 300 to Rs 1,600).

The Hush repertoire also offers mattress toppers or fluffy quilts that can be spread on top of the mattresses for added comfort (Rs 3,000 to Rs 7,000); mattress protectors which are slim, quilted pads that protect against spillage and enhance the life of a mattress (Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000) and soft duvets or modern alternatives to blankets (Rs 1,900 to Rs 5,000).

In the mattress department, Hush has mattresses made from Memory Foam that was first developed by NASA for its US space programme in 1970. This has higher-density than ordinary foam so that the mattresses provide more support to the spine.

But the showstopper is the Royal Partner-Perfect line of mattresses which have a hard and soft side. “So if the husband suffers a back problem, he can sleep on the firm side and the wife can take the softer side,” says Deepika Joshi, retail head, Hush. Priced at Rs 38,940, the mattresses come in Standard, King and Queen sizes.

For more premium sleepware there are smart mattresses and pillows from Tempur that come with 15-year warranties. Rajiv Frank, general manager, marketing, Tempur says: “A medium-firm mattress is good for back pains and stiff-necks.”

Tempur mattresses (in Single, King and Queen sizes) called Combi mattresses are usually anywhere between 15cm (7cm visco-elastic material and 8cm foam) and 20 cm (9cm visco-elastic material and 11 cm foam) thick. There are more: mattress overlays (mattress protectors) and pillows in myriad sizes. While the mattresses are priced between Rs 30,000 and Rs 50,000 the pillows cost from Rs 5,000 to Rs 12,000.

Frank says: “The pillows are hypoallergenic and since they resist dust and bacteria, they tend to keep clean. Also the pressure points of our body are reduced because of the high-density material used and you don’t toss, turn and even snore like we may with other typical pillows.”

But if you aren’t feeling up to splurging, go for spring mattresses from Welspun that are easier on the pocket and priced between Rs 7,199 and Rs 31,299. The coir mattresses cost even less and are priced from Rs 2,999 to Rs 14,299.

And if duvets are out of your budget, check out vivid quilts from home-grown furnishing stores including Anokhi, Fabindia and Maspar. Maspar’s lightweight quilts in the Karishmatic Energy line can cost anywhere between Rs 110 and Rs 3,995. The colours are a cheerful violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.

So sleep tight tonight and, hopefully, say goodbye to all your sleep-related woes.
