Operation Blackmail
Mamata siege near Buddha’s house Trinamul cell calls taxi, auto strike today Auto raids spark clashes

Calcutta, Jan. 2: If the court bans, they will use brawn.

Operators of illegal autos today let loose bursts of violence that appeared to be aimed at causing inconvenience to commuters and holding the law hostage with the threat of more lawlessness.

The show of force was backed by the Trinamul Congress, whose leader Mamata Banerjee squatted at a crossing that leads to the chief minister’s home to press for the release of 16 persons arrested for rioting.

At midnight, Mamata was sitting at the Palm Avenue-Bondel Road crossing after being stopped by police.

Another group of Trinamul supporters planted themselves on chairs at the Palm Avenue-Broad Street crossing. The blockades cut off two routes Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee takes to reach Writers’ Buildings. At least two other alternative routes were open till 1am on Saturday.

The auto operators turned violent as the police became less lenient on the second day of the ban and impounded 37 vehicles against six yesterday.

Trinamul led from the front in most areas where auto drivers blocked roads, damaged vehicles and prevented commuters from taking other forms of transport. Ekbalpore, Taratala, Hazra, Rashbehari Avenue and Pratapaditya Road bore the brunt. Roadblocks were put up by Citu and Trinamul-affiliated auto drivers at Ultadanga, Maniktala, Park Circus and Sealdah, too.

A Trinamul-backed union has called a 12-hour taxi and auto strike tomorrow in Calcutta from 6am — an agitation targeting commuters in the hope that the hardship will gradually build public opinion against the ban aimed at fighting air pollution. The union controls 8,000 of the 40,000 taxis in the city.

Protesters who were allegedly in a rally organised by Trinamul torched a state bus on Route 33 at the Hazra crossing around 2.50pm.

Mamata entered the picture a few hours after 16 persons were arrested — some from a Trinamul trade union office — for attacking vehicles. In the evening, she reached the office of the Indian National Trinamul Trade Union Congress on Pratapaditya Road, near Rashbehari crossing. “The police are targeting Trinamul supporters’ peaceful protest,” Mamata said.

Around 8.30pm, Mamata started a 5km trek that took her towards the chief minister’s residence but was stopped. “Why are you not releasing our men?” Mamata asked Sivaji Ghosh, the additional commissioner of police in charge of south Calcutta, at the Bondel Road crossing.

Ghosh: “We arrested 18 persons and released two who were not auto drivers. Of the 16, we will screen them further to check the extent of their offence. But they have been arrested under non-bailable sections and cannot be released before being produced in court.”

Mamata: “What you have done is discriminatory. I am losing my patience now. I will take out another procession tomorrow and there will be the Muharram procession. I will see how you manage both.”

She then chided the police for entering the union office. “Would you enter Alimuddin (the CPM headquarters) to ransack it and arrest people?”

Ghosh said some policemen entered the office but he had ordered them to come out immediately. The police said the auto raids would continue. But whether the government can stomach the backlash remains to be seen.

I think that the Bengal government is doing the right thing. Mamta Banerjee is a trouble maker as we had seen in Singur. She is an opportunist and is looking for cheap votes. Bring the army out to settle the issue. Auto rickshaws are a traffic hazard and a nusiance but people must understand that these vechiles are a security risk as we had seen in Delhi that most of the terrorists used auto rickshaws to do the bombings.

BLACKMAILIG....Beautiful example. Thanks you for this unick comment. New types of Blackmailing politics were being carried out by the name of auto rickshaw driver’s agitation in west Bengal. The opposition had promised that their agitation would remain peaceful. They did not keep the pledge.  Three buses along with much privet taxi were set ablaze Saturday by protesting Trinamool Congress-backed auto-rickshaw operators protesting a court ban on ageing of public Transport vehicles. All that hooliganism done as per direct instruction of  TMC and allies along with TMC suprimo  Mamta  Banerjee on Friday night after a failure attack on buddhadev’s residence. From Nandigram to singur she always want dead body by which she can able to create more and more nuisances I west Bengal. Government is creating an example by entertaining the gundami, nuisances & hooliganisms of MAMATA and her allies. At last I want to say that government should act as government, and take strict action against the GUNDARAJ of MAMATA. My appeal to Mr. Buddhadev that you should obey the verdict which was given by the people of west Bengal in the year 2006 (giving you 235 MLA seat out of 292) for Industrialisations and development

What else do you expect from Mamata banerjee and her gang of hoodlums? Have they ever done anything positive? Do they even care? I would love to see the day when these trinamool gundaas are beaten up by a spontaneous public! Otherwise, these scums of bengal will always be there to spoil peoples' lives in some pretext or other. Begal dont deserve these people...let's get rid of them

I would like to Ask Mamata, what she and her partymen have done; Isn't it a contempt of court?
If she did not agree why did she not move court?
And as for us, how long we Bengali's would let Mamata hold the state for a ransom.

I think Mamata has totally lost the plot....she is clueless as to what agenda she needs to fight for. I think to bring this brief spate of lawlessness to a rapid halt, the paramilitary forces should be brought in asap.

It was just a few months ago that this opportunist, Mamta Banerji had defranchised the state of Bengal by aborting the Nano project and ancillaries in the Hooghly district to the tune of about 2000 crores. Apart from this many poor farmers lost their land and livelihood and there were hundreds left with huge debts. Some took their lives. Now she wants to take out processions and maybe later call a bandh. If the court imposes a ban she is gonna defy the order. Is spite of all this, this woman is walking the streets free. She is using her political clout to blackmail the state. This contemptous woman must be put behind bars and her party banned. She has not only cost the state a big loss but has also taken it backwards. Auto rickshaws are a security risk and must be banned. It is high time the streets of Calcutta are cleared and given back to the public.

I am a Calcuttan living outside the city for the last year or so. It is very clear what the protesters are trying to do here. They are trying to build up a sense of public anger and "cholchhe cholbe" attitude in the mind of the common man. If these protests spillover on Monday, then the commuter will be harassed the most. Imagine no autos in Rashbehari, none in Taratala, Hazra etc. People will slowly start grudging - what is the issue if old autos are allowed to ply? Some will come and say about how many people will lose their jobs. And in an opportune moment of time, mightbe towards the end of next week, the transport minister will ask for more time to implement the ban.
And then it will get shelved - much like the 15 year old Taxi ban never materialized.

The only way is, go to office early this week - avoid the rush hour and take public buses on your way to and from office or wherever you want to travel.

Boycott autos for a week, JUST one week, and we would have done something to shake the core of this protest.

We all slate Mamata for Singur, but there was not a single protest march in Calcutta (except the one in Sector V to protest ill treatment of techies by TMC).

We did not take to the streets like we did for Rizwanur. We did not show Mamata that the people force is against her.

This time we must take to the streets and beat these politicians at their own game.

Calcutta, stand up and be counted. Things do not happen by themselves, you have to make things happen.

Seriously, this insane woman is leaving no chance to tarnish the image of Kolkata. I really feel ashamed when friends from other states make fun of what goes on here. Even when she was not in the scene, these were not uncommon... and when she'll be gone, there would be some one else to replace her. We are so good at creating hurdles for ourselves.
