Students on Games course

Jamshedpur, Jan. 1: A month and a half to go for National Games, and school and college students are gearing up for their voluntary stints at the mega event.

Around 45 government and private schools have been asked by East Singhbhum district administration to sent the names of volunteers for National Games scheduled to start from February 13. The last date for submission of nomination forms is January 10.

“We would prefer students to scouts and guides from schools of the district. We are ready with our list of volunteers and would submit it after the vacation. Since there is a great demand for volunteers, the administration has also asked a few colleges to send their students for the event. I had asked the principals of the schools that students should be given training in etiquette and manners,” said Nirja Kujur, the East Singhbhum district education officer.

National Games would require 400 well-groomed volunteers from Classes IX and X and a few others from colleges. Till now, only Karim City College is ready with some 75 volunteers. The nomination forms have already been filled in. The list of the students will be sent to National Games Organising Committee and a final round will be held to pick the best among them.

“Some criteria based on which the volunteers would be chosen are in English and Hindi, physically fitness to work 10 hours a day and presentable, adaptable and hardworking with positive attitude,” said Harbhajan Singh, the head of Tata Steel sports department.

The volunteers would have to undergo rigorous training.
