Matador turns turtle, 1 killed

A Matador carrying 35 picnickers overturned near Garfa Bridge on Kona Expressway on Thursday morning, killing a 35-year-old woman and injuring eight passengers. The injured were taken to Howrah State General Hospital, where Maharani Roy died. Police said the Matador overturned after the driver tried to give way to a speeding car approaching from the right. The group was bound for Bandel.

Hospital assault

Family members of a six-year-old girl who died at National Medical College and Hospital on Thursday morning allegedly assaulted an employee after he refused to allow them to bring down the body in the elevator. Relatives of Zeba Kayanat, a Park Circus resident who died of jaundice, said the liftman had asked for a bribe to bring down the body from the fifth-floor paediatric ward. The situation was brought under control after police intervened.

Mishaps

Sami Akhtar, 25, died when the motorcycle he was riding skidded off the road in Kasba early on Thursday. The man riding pillion was injured. The Howrah residents were taken to National Medical College, where Akhtar was declared dead on arrival. motorcyclist, Johar Das, was injured after he rammed into a vehicle near Science City late on Wednesday. Mintu Das, 39, was injured after being dashed by a minibus near Parama Island on Wednesday night.

Robbery

Four armed men robbed a 40-year-old insurance agent at Banerjeepara in Barasat late on Wednesday. Police said the gang entered Swapan Sarkar’s house and looted cash and jewellery worth Rs 80,000.
