Life term for help
An Alipore fast-track court on Friday awarded life sentence to Rabindra Santra for murdering his 71-year-old employer Lalita Devi Goenka in her Alipore flat in August 2004.
Road mishap
Three persons died in accidents since Thursday night. Hasem Laskar, 25, was run over by a truck at Kamalgazi, near Sonarpur. Motorist Nabyendu Shaw, 27, was also fatally injured when a truck hit him at the CR Avenue-GC Avenue crossing. Raghunath Pal, 50, died when a minibus hit him on Strand Road. Six others were injured.
Cop dead
Reserve Police Force constable D. Palwat, 45, was found dead in his railway quarters on Narkeldanga Main Road on Friday morning. A liquor bottle was found close to the body.
Sealing drive
Five more tanneries in Tiljala and Topsia were sealed on Friday during a joint raid by police, CESC, the pollution control board and the civic body. Since Monday, 38 tanneries have been sealed.
Turtles seized
Police seized 1,200kg of live Gangetic turtles in Barasat on Thursday night. Truck driver Sampad Kumar was arrested. The turtles were being brought to the city from Andhra Pradesh.
Office blaze
A fire broke out on the ground floor of National Insurance Companys office on RN Mukherjee Road on Friday morning. It was doused in half an hour.
Lost cheques
Two envelopes containing cheques for Rs 10.18 lakh were found by a sergeant at the AJC Bose Road-Lord Sinha Road crossing on Friday and returned to their owner.
