Axe on SDO for slap

Calcutta, Dec. 12: The subdivisional officer of Mathabhanga, Anindya Kar, has been placed under suspension for allegedly slapping a jail warden last month.

Bengal chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb said here today that a departmental inquiry had been started against Kar.

On November 4, Kar had summoned the warden of the subdivisional jail, Mohammad Mubarak Ali, to his office and slapped him in the presence of jailer Tarak Das. Ali had to be treated for a bleeding ear at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.


Idol theft

Islampur: Five persons were arrested from Dimti on Friday while they were trying to smuggle a Ganesha idol to Bangladesh. Police said the accused — Md Azimuddin, Shyamal Pal, Jehan Ali, Rahmat Ali and Pacha Sheikh — are residents of Dhubri in Assam. The idol, made of brass and plated with gold, was also seized.


Body found

Islampur: Goalpokhor Police recovered the body of Ranjit Majumdar (40), a contractor of Tajpur, from a local paddy field on Friday. Majumdar was missing since Thursday evening. The body bore injury marks, police said.


Driver killed

Islampur: An unidentified man died in a road accident at Kanki in Chakulia on Friday, when the truck he was driving rammed into another vehicle on NH31. Police have seized both the vehicles.


Land clash

Islampur: Seven persons were injured in a clash over the possession of a plot of land at Ladhi village in Chakulia on Friday. The injured persons are under treatment at a hospital. No one has been arrested.


Concert

Siliguri: Students and teachers of St Michael’s School here held its annual concert on its premises on Friday. Gerry Arathoon, the secretary for the Council of the Indian School Certificate Examinations, was present at the concert.
