Elephant trouble

A forest department team rushed to Chandranpur on Tuesday to chase away a herd of about 20 elephants that has been destroying standing crops and creating havoc in the area since Monday night. The farmers had lodged a formal complaint with the department earlier in the day.

Body found

Police found the body of Ratul Chandra Das, 34, with head injuries at his residence in Kahikuchi on Monday night. The police suspect that Das, a staff of a private firm, was bludgeoned to death. The victim’s wife, Kalpana, had left home last Saturday with her son and two daughters after a tiff with him.

Injured

A 30-year-old woman, Rubina Begum, was critically injured when she tried to stop a fight between her husband, Abdul Jalil, and Subhash Sarkar in Pragjyotishpur on Tuesday afternoon. Sarkar attacked her with a machete.

Accident

A senior officer of Nalbari district administration, Nur Hussain, was among four persons injured when their Nalbari-bound Maruti car collided with a truck at Amingaon on Tuesday evening.

Stolen baby

Fatasil Ambari police picked up Biswajit Das, a resident of Kahilipara, on Tuesday on charges of purchasing a stolen baby for Rs 10,000 from two unknown women.

Bird flu

State zoo employees residing on the campus were asked on Tuesday not to keep hens and ducks in their homes int he wake of the outbreak of bird flu in the state.

Celebration

Abacus, a mathematical society for children, on Tuesday said it would celebrate the birth anniversary of mathematician Srinivas Ramanujan on December 22.

Security meet

The Kachari Market Development Samiti on Tuesday held a discussion on the security of the market in the wake of the October 30 serial blasts.
