Would-be teacher kills self
Siliguri, Dec. 3: A youth, who had passed out from a Primary Teachers’ Training Institute about three years ago, committed suicide today by hanging at his Bhaktinagar house.
Family members of Dilip Pal (26) found him dead in the room and informed police. “Although my son had joined a private firm, he used to lament that he could not be a teacher because of affiliation of his training college had been cancelled,” Basanti Pal said.
Cheat held
Siliguri: Sarbani Biswas of Hakimpara was arrested on Wednesday following a complaint lodged by principal of St Joseph’s School Matigara Margaret Subba. The principal complained to police that Sarbani had taken Rs 30,000 from a guardian, promising to admit his daughter to the school.
Land clash
Islampur: One person was killed and seven others injured in a clash at Katthalbari village in Goalpokhar late on Tuesday night. The clash was over a plot of land. The injured have been admitted to the subdivisional hospital here. No one has been arrested.
Lost & found
Jalpaiguri: The 16-year-old daughter of a CPM zonal committee secretary from Moynaguri was rescued from the Esplanade area in Calcutta on Wednesday morning. She went missing after being forced to appear for a vocational examination in school for which she was not prepared. She rang up her father from Calcutta and said she was lost. Her father contacted minister Jogesh Burman who arranged for her journey back home.
Bus fare
Jalpaiguri: Members of 15 bus owners’ associations from Darjeeling, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri on Wednesday have decided to reduced rates for daily commuters in these districts. The commuters will have to pay 80 per cent of the actual fare and not the 67 per cent as demanded by them. The concession would be allowed from January 1 on production of identity cards to be issued by the associations.
