Raiganj, Dec. 3: A couple from Uttar Pradesh who were arrested yesterday and charged under the Arms Act were produced before the chief judicial magistrate here this afternoon and remanded in police custody for three days.
Balwant Singh, his wife Manjit Kaur and four children were travelling in a pick-up truck loaded with household articles when it was stopped by police as part of a routine check at Siliguri More here.
A search revealed the presence of a crude single-barrelled gun, a one-shot pipe-gun and eight live cartridges inside an almirah in the truck.
Singh had told the police that they were residents of Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh and on their way to visit his in-laws in Gaighata close to the Bangladesh border in North 24-Parganas.
Sources in the court said the police had asked for seven days of remand for the sake of investigation.
North Dinajpur superintendent of police Shankar Singha said: “We have recovered a mobile phone from them and we are going through the call records.”
The Bihar and Uttar Pradesh police have been contacted. The police in North 24 Parganas have been told to check the Gaighata address.
