Pensioner run over by truck

Siliguri, Dec. 2: An 86-year-old woman of Gurung Busty was today run over by an army vehicle when she was trying to cross Hill Cart Road.

Police said Parul Moulik was hit by the truck while returning from a bank after drawing her pension. She died on way to Siliguri District Hospital. Bhaben Gogoi, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested and the vehicle has been seized.


Jumbo kills

Alipurduar: A 40-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Rajabhatkhawa on Tuesday. Mariam Oraon had entered the forest under Buxa Tiger Reserve (west) to collect firewood, when the animal attacked her.


Tremor felt

Siliguri: An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale with its epicentre on the Sikkim-Nepal border occurred at 10.41am on Tuesday. It lasted for two seconds and was felt up to a 100km radius, said Subir Sarkar, the in-charge of the weather office at North Bengal University. “The epicentre was 15km west of Pelling and 18km north of Phalut and had a depth of 23.4km below the earth’s surface.” Several people rushed out of their offices and homes in Siliguri when they felt the quake.


Timber seized

Siliguri: Sal logs and furniture worth Rs 1 lakh were seized by officials of the Baikunthapur forest division who also arrested a manager of a tea plantation in Mantadari village in Rajganj block. The arrested person was booked under the Indian Forest Act 1927.


Trucks collide

Islampur: Two truck drivers were injured after their vehicles collided on NH31 at Gunjaria in Islampur on Tuesday. Both are under treatment at the subdivisional hospital here, police said.


Tea survey

Jalpaiguri: The survey to find out the number of small tea growers, their holdings, scale of production and related information will begin in Jalpaiguri district from Wednesday. The district land and land reforms office has engaged 42 surveyors. The Rs 8 lakh-project is expected to be complete in three months.
