Siliguri, Dec. 1: A study will be conducted to see if it is feasible to construct a railway overbridge at Ghumtee 4, one of the main entry points to Jalpaiguri town, to ease traffic congestion.
“We have come to know of the demand that a flyover is essential at Ghumtee 4 to stop frequent traffic snarls. Experts will be called in soon to undertake a survey,” Bengal urban development minister and Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA) chairman Asok Bhattacharya said today.
Talking to journalists at Jalpaiguri circuit house, where he met officials and members of the Jalpaiguri sub-committee of SJDA, Bhattacharya said: “As Mainaguri, Falalata and Jaigaon, all located in Jalpaiguri district, are witnessing rapid urbanisation, we have decided to form municipalities in the three towns soon.”
At present, Jalpaiguri, Dhupguri and Alipurduar are the three municipalities in the district.
At the meeting, it was also decided to find alternative source of revenue for Sarojendra Deb Raikat Sanskritik Kalakendra, commonly known as Art Gallery, which is incurring heavy losses. “Although we had handed over the gallery to the municipality, it cannot pay even the monthly electricity bills. We have engaged professional consultants to carry out a survey and inform us as to how the auditorium can be used in a better way,” said the minister.
The meeting also decided to work out a development plan for Jalpaiguri and launch community drinking water schemes by spending Rs 30 lakh at Raipur and Sikarpur-Bhandapur, the two closed tea estates, for the benefit of workers and their families.
An official present at the meeting said the Jalpaiguri municipality had been assigned with two road construction works also.
