Innings defeat for Manipur

Imphal, Dec. 1: Bengal today defeated Manipur by an innings and 209 runs in the three-day under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, 2008 played at Luwangpokpa Cricket Stadium at Luwangsangbam.

The Bengal bowlers tore apart the Manipur batting line-up, bowling out the team for 35 runs.

Bengal collected five points along with one bonus point from a total of six from the match.

Bengal set a huge target of 314 in 74.4 overs yesterday.

In reply, Manipur yesterday lost two wickets for a mere 14 runs in 13 overs when stumps were drawn.

Night watchman Md Sultan (01) and Th. Gelson Singh (0) did not last long when play resumed this morning with Sultan falling to the same score to Soumya Roy.

The catch was taken by Sandipan Das. Gelson, too, was bowled out by a Roy delivery.

More disasters awaited Manipur as the next two batsmen, N. Ajit Singh and Mintu Chandra, were clean bowled by Roy for a duck.

Next to go was L. Robert Roy (also for a duck) to the bowling off Gurdeep Singh. His catch was taken by Writtick Chaterjee.

With the middle order batsmen falling like ninepins, the lower order offered little resistance.

Number eight batsman S. Sanjit Singh and number nine S. Deepak Singh, however, kept their cool for a brief moment, but Sanjit was trapped leg before wicket by Gurdeep Singh on 4.

The wickets of last two batsmen Jitender Thakur and P. Satyajit Singh, who failed to score, were taken by Gurdeep Singh and Soumya Roy respectively and the catches were taken by Prateek.

S. Deepak Singh was not out on 4 as Manipur scored only 35 losing all wickets in 27 overs. For Bengal, Roy was the most successful bowler, claiming five wickets for six runs in nine overs while Gurdeep Singh scalped four wickets for eight runs in eight overs. Sadipan Das claimed one wicket.

Set to follow on, Manipur in their second innings scored 70 runs in 20.5 overs.
