Rape case count

New Delhi, Dec. 1 (PTI): Every hour, two women are raped in India, a report by the National Crime Records Bureau has said.

A total of 20,737 rape cases were reported last year, registering a 7.2 per cent increase over the previous year. Madhya Pradesh (3,010) has recorded the maximum cases with Bengal (2,106) coming second. Parents or family members were involved in 405 cases.

Silencer gun

Kurukshetra (PTI): A student was shot at with a silencer-fitted firearm on the Kurukshetra University campus. Rakesh Kumar, an MPhil student was in the canteen when he suddenly collapsed in his chair. His arm was bleeding and a friend found a hole in the chair, possibly made by a bullet. Police are probing the case.

MLA arrest

Ahmedabad (PTI): Police have arrested Gujarat Congress working president Kuvarji Bavalia for allegedly encroaching on government land in his Assembly seat, Jasdan. The party has said the arrest of Bavalia, also the chairman of public accounts panel of the House, was a result of political vendetta.

Reshma body

Kottayam (PTI): Hundreds of people on Monday paid their last respects to Reshma James, allegedly shot dead by her estranged husband in a US church last week. The body was brought to her house in Kerala’s Kaduthuruthy on Sunday.

Hotel death

New Delhi (PTI): A 50-year-old Japanese woman was found dead in a hotel apparently from a drug overdose. Agase Jean Marry, the husband of Okoru Odda, sought the hotel’s help to get a doctor for his wife after she collapsed in the room, police said. When the staff went to the room, both were lying still. Odda had died by then, the police said. Agase is in a critical condition.

Gamble net

Bangalore (PTI): A 13-member gang allegedly involved in gambling has been arrested following a raid at a hotel in the city. Twelve cellphones and Rs 36,275 cash have been seized.
