Tata feeder archers find place in Orissa team

Jamshedpur, Dec. 1: Tata Steel sports feeder centres in rural hinterland have finally begin to yield results.

Four archers from the feeder centre at Duburi in Orissa have been selected to represent Orissa team to participate in national events.

The archers underwent several selection trials before being picked up for the state archery outfit, said an official of Tata Steel sports department. While Budhu Hembrom and Gitanjali Mohanta would represent the state squad for National Rural Archery Competition in Andhra Pradesh, Sushmita Behera and Jhilli Parida was chosen for the Orissa team that participated in the recently concluded Junior National Archery Championship in Jamshedpur.

The feeder centre was set up on April 14 this year at Duburi in Jajpur district by the company to train young sporting talents in Orissa. The centre provides basics and advanced training in football and archery in a phase-wise manner. The cadets are also sent to Tata Football Academy and Tata Archery Academy for better exposure and making use of the advanced facilities.

The cadets were selected for this centre through talent camps organised in Bhubaneswar, Duburi, Sukinda, Bamnipal, Joda and Keonjhar. About 1,000 boys and girls participated over a period of two months where around 240 boys and girls were shortlisted from these camps and were given intensive training.

Tata Steel has set up three sports academies for football, archery and athletics in the steel city. The company also came up with sports feeder centres at Noamundi in West Singhbhum, Jamadoba in Dhanbad and Kalinganagar in Orissa.
