March, concert on World AIDS Day
- HIV-cases on the rise in Meghalaya

Shillong, Nov. 30: Rock concerts, a candlelight procession and road shows will mark World AIDS Day programme in Shillong tomorrow.

The Meghalaya AIDS Control Society today said in collaboration with the NGOs, World AIDS Day would be observed on the universal theme: Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise with a variety of programmes.

An advocacy meet will be held jointly with various clubs, cultural organisations, Scouts and Guides and students’ unions tomorrow morning at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Laitumkhrah, to generate awareness on how to prevent HIV/AIDS.

At the advocacy meet here, state health minister adviser Pariong will address the youths.

A candlelight procession will be taken out by the people from different localities of Shillong.

It will be flagged off from Don Bosco Square in the evening by former minister R.G. Lyngdoh.

This will be followed by a short rock concert at the Old Assembly site at Police Bazaar where local artistes, including Timmy Hujon, Catherine Pyngrope, Valerie Khyriem, Desmond, Sara Syiemlieh and B. Lanong will perform.

Meghalaya Speaker Bindo Lanaong will address the gathering before the musical evening. Pariong said there were as many as 149 HIV-positive cases in the state.

The number of patients who died of AIDS is two. Pariong said a few persons were living with AIDS in the state.

As part of creating awareness, the state government has organised a series of programmes, including poster campaigns, in adherence to the guidelines of the Centre, he said.
