Long & short of it

Ishant vs Ishant

The 20-year-old pacer shocked the country when he appeared at the India-England Bangalore One-Dayer with his Medusa-like curls cropped to their bare minimum. Taking a leaf out of skipper Dhoni’s book, Ishant has gone for a short, minimum maintenance cut. And while many may miss the striking image of those curls flying in the air as he came bounding in to bowl to Ponting, we think the new schoolboy look works for the lanky lad.

Dhoni vs Dhoni

Women went weak in the knees when the Team India Captain emerged late last year with a spanking new haircut. Dhoni’s shoulder-length hair (admired even by former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf) gave way to a cropped look, inspired by a certain John Abraham. Jet-black hair replaced unkempt auburn tresses. If Dhoni’s long-haired look was a girl-magnet (one fan in Calcutta had even managed to breach the security ring and hug the rage from Ranchi) then the short, spiked look has upped his appeal among many more female fans.

Hrithik vs Hrithik

Very few men look gorgeous with long hair. But then very few men look like Hrithik Roshan. The suave thief of Dhoom:2 or the regal raja in Jodhaa Akbar were great, but then the Krrish look wasn’t. So we stand divided about the right Hrithik look.

John vs John

The man who had a hand in Dhoni’s cut is now being aped by millions. The hot bod’s sexy cropped look that arrived with No Smoking and Goal has peaked with Dostana. The yummmm look is, well, yummmm. And it’s going to stay that way — not because you dig it but because She does. “I love John with short hair. I think he looks so good now,” says Bipasha.

Aamir vs Aamir

No Bollywood actor has experimented with his hair quite as much as Mr Perfectionist. From the goatee and spiked hair in Dil Chahta Hai to the long unkempt tresses of Mangal Pandey to the clean cut of Taare Zameen to the neither-here-nor-there style of Rang De Basanti to the myriad looks of Ghajini... Whew!

Bobby vs Bobby

Take your pick: Bobby with carrot-coloured shoulder-length hair in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom or the cropped Dostana look? Beta Deol may have had many swooning with those long locks in his debut film Barsaat, but papa Deol wasn’t impressed. So off went the curly mop and what emerged was a clean, short-haired look. Thank god for papa mercies.

Ishant said “change was needed”...

The ones who really need to change...

Andrew Symonds The dreadlocks have tormented us for years. Maybe a change in hairstyle will help the Australian destroyer to get his head right

Himesh Reshammiya Wig or hair transplant, it is an eyesore. Bring back the cap please

Salman Khan It may be just for his new film Veer, but the unkempt brown curls give Sallu the luchcha look

Lasith Malinga Time to douse the bush fire

Amy Winehouse Great voice, disaster hair, though it’s caught on
