Goodbye scalpel, laser tech for perfect smile

Jamshedpur, Nov. 27: Surgeries to solve gums and tooth problems will no longer be a scalpel and knife story.

Laser technology has made inroads into the steel city dental clinics.

City’s Healthy Smile Dental Clinic has launched a Siro Laser, a German technology, to make dental surgeries painless and blood-less one. This is the first time this technology has been introduced in the state as well as the city.

What more, is that the technology is said to be a time-saving one too. This will come as a boon for people of this age who are always on the move.

“Tooth and gums are the neglected part of one’s body. But these problems are on the rise due to poor hygiene and lifestyle of people. Many people try to avoid surgeries as it entails pain and problems like taking in liquid food after a dental surgery. But surgeries would now be painless affair,” said Deepak Kedia, the proprietor of Healthy Smile Dental Clinic.

Laser dentistry helps in removal of benign tumours, reshaping of gum tissue, gum and teeth surgeries.

A negligible amount of anaesthesia is required depending upon the severity of the case.

“As the laser light uses only one colour, it is effective in vaporising the water in the concerned area. It coagulates the protein to seal and block the blood vessels. The laser can convert the haemoglobin into a thick jelly that cannot flow. Thus, making it a painless surgery and there is no blood loss,” said Himadri Chakravarty, a Calcutta-based dentist, who is an expert in laser technology.

Earlier, people had to travel to other cities to get the laser surgery done but now people can undergo the surgery that will save them time, money.

The surgery would not be heavy on the pocket also.

A full mouth gum surgery, which is the most common one, would cost the same as the normal one, while frenectomy (the removal of a frenulum) would cost Rs 3,000 where normal surgery costs Rs 2,500. Removal of a tooth will cost Rs 700 instead of Rs 400 in normal surgeries.

“I was suffering from accumulated mass of flesh on my tongue for quite some time now but I did not dare to undergo a surgery thinking of the pain and how safe it would be. It is after I got to know about the laser technology that I thought of taking the risk. And to my surprise I came out of the clinic within 15 minutes! By the time I realised that I was about to undergo a surgery, it was over and I did not feel any pain,” said an enthusiastic Om Prakash, the first patients to undergo the laser technology at the Healthy Smile Dental Clinic.
