Hunt for Raj on Mumbai trains

Jamshedpur, Nov. 26: Passengers on board the Howrah-Mumbai Geetanjali Express looked confused and scared when some people came hunting for Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray at Tatanagar railway station this evening.

Shouting anti-Raj slogans, activists of Bhojpuria Beyar put up posters on a few Mumbai-bound trains declaring Raj an absconder “wanted” by the Jamshedpur police.

Displaying a telephone number of a police control room (PCR) in the city, the poster announced that people should alert the police if they found Raj anywhere. Members of Bhojpuria Beyar maintained that like every law-abiding citizen, the people in Maharashtra should help locate the MNS chief. Central president of the outfit Ramesh Kumar said: “We want Raj to abide by the rules and register his presence with the Jamshedpur court. Though we are not authorised, we have taken up the issue as a matter of protest.”

He also maintained that the Mumbai police and Raj Thackeray are playing with the law ever since a warrant for Raj was sent to Maharashtra. The outfit maintained that they would not interfere if Raj visits the city court first.

“We are against Raj’s hate-campaign. We will not indulge in violence if the Mumbai police decide to bring the MNS party chief here to make an appearance in court. Moreover, he has nothing to fear. We would facilitate his trip here,” said Sudhir Kumar, a member of Bhojpuria Beyar. The campaign, however, left the passengers in a state of fear.

“When the train entered the railway station, I heard some people shout anti-Raj slogans. For a moment I thought the activists were looking for Marathi people to punish them. Later, I learnt it was a peaceful campaign,” said Anant Choudhary, a Mumbai-bound passenger.

Other passengers claimed that the posters could create trouble if MNS supporters see them in Maharashtra.
