Award for activist

Journalist-turned-social activist Dayamani Barla will receive the 2008 Chingari Award for Women Against Corporate Crime in India in New Delhi on December 5, reports our correspondent.

Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy will give away the award — a citation and Rs 50,000 — on behalf of the Chingari Trust of Bhopal.

Barla has been spearheading a campaign against ArcelorMittal’s proposed steel plant in Khunti. “Our struggle is not against any business house but displacement. I am happy our efforts have been recognised,” she said.
